Earphones can be a great way to block out loud noises when trying to sleep. Certain sounds, such as white noise, have been proven to help block out sounds in a soothing manner that can help aid sleep. There are many apps and devices available that connect to your earphones to create an immersive sleep experience.
However, there are some risks with wearing earphones. Ear infections are a risk from prolonged wear, and headphones with cables can be dangerous. If done irresponsibility, earbud wear can lead to loss of hearing.
Prolonged wear can lead to a buildup of ear wax over time, which can make hearing more muffled. Wearing them for long can cause the earphone to rub against the ear canal and cause irritation. Both can lead to ear infections from bacteria being built up and kept in for longer than they should be.
Although the risk is low, it is possible to strangle yourself if your earbuds have wires attached. If you choose to listen to music or soothing sounds at too high a volume, you can permanently damage your hearing. Prolonged exposure to loud noises can lead to permanent hearing loss.
Choosing wireless is a great way to ensure you won't get tangled up by wires. Ensure that your earphones are either not noise cancelling, or that option can be turned off to ensure you don't sleep through any emergencies. Keeping your earbuds clean will also help prevent bacteria buildup that leads to infection. If infection persists, trying playing sounds through speakers instead.
Alternatively, you can wear over-ear headphones rather than ones that go inside your ear. This will prevent infection or hearing loss from too close a contact. For volume control many phones (e.g, iPhones) have safety settings that contain a volume limit to prevent you from going too loud. They will also issue a warning if you go over this volume.
