A Housewife pillowcase refers to a pillowcase design style with a sewn edge and a hidden internal flap for secure fastening. The pillowcase gets its name from the Housewives Co-operative in Bolton, England, where the style was first patented in the Victorian era.
An Oxford Pillowcase has a wide fabric edge in its design, increasing the size of the pillow and its case significantly. The name is derived from the Oxford cloth fabric - the fabric traditionally used in its manufacture - but designs vary.
Although they both originate in England, the main difference between Oxford and Housewife pillowcases is that Housewife Pillowcases favour practicality, whereas Oxford ones opt for style and flair.
Oxford pillowcases are more obvious from a distance, as their design makes the pillows appear larger and more grand, in many respects. The names are also a giveaway - the Oxford pillowcases have a more "fancy" style, like the prestige of Oxford academia, whereas the Housewife Pillowcase works to the benefit of the person decorating and maintaining the pillow, like a housewife traditionally would.
That is not to say, however, that housewife pillowcases cannot look equally attractive or are made from poorer quality materials. There are plenty of housewife pillowcases, as shown in the examples above, that are made from natural, premium materials, such as organic cotton and linen, for soft, simple, rustic-looking chic.
Housewife pillowcases are typically more simple, but tailored pillowcases with a hidden fastening for a neater look.
Oxford pillowcases are often more stylistic with larger overall size. They are more likely to feature a pattern or design - although this isn't always the case.
Although the outer design, such as the edging, may be larger on an Oxford pillowcase, it has the same internal dimensions as a housewife pillowcase.
Oxford pillowcases are usually fastened from the bottom, depending on the brand.
