Renowned for its bold fragrance and unmistakably smoky character, Lapsang Souchong is one of the most iconic teas from China’s Fujian province. Often described as having a unique “tarry” flavour, this special smoked black tea offers a beautifully balanced aroma and a rich, memorable taste that lingers on the palate.
The name “souchong” comes from the Fukienese word meaning “sub-variety,” referring to its place within the family of black teas grown in the Wuyi Mountains of Fujian. This region is famed worldwide for producing exceptional teas, thanks to its towering mountain ranges, lush pine forests, and cool mist-heavy climate—the perfect environment for cultivating leaves of extraordinary quality.
The finest Lapsang Souchong is traditionally produced within the Wuyi nature preserve, where the tea is carefully smoke-dried over pinewood fires, infusing the leaves with their signature aroma. When first exported to Western Europe, its distinctive flavour captivated tea drinkers and quickly made Lapsang Souchong a favourite on international markets.
