Sam and Shivani, husband and wife co-founders of Strawberry & Cream - Home, were born and raised in Kenya and while growing up they experienced frequent water shortages. Appreciating the value of this basic but precious resource, they were motivated to start their luxury, sustainable bedding company when they discovered the negative impact that cotton farming has on perhaps earth’s most precious and scarce resource - water.
They were shocked to learn how big a problem cotton farming actually is, and it played on their conscience. We all depend on cotton for a wide range of needs. With a growing population, demand for cotton will increase. The resulting effect on climate change is therefore likely to get worse considering it requires over 11,000 litres of water to grow just 1kg of standard cotton.
Cotton is grown mostly under irrigated conditions. Sam and Shivani found out that organic cotton reduces the use of irrigated water by up to 90%, compared to standard cotton. Organic cotton is also free from harmful chemicals and is kinder to your skin and the planet. Their mission is to spread the awareness of organic cotton as a more sustainable alternative to standard cotton. Their bedding is made from 100% GOTS certified organic cotton. GOTS is the gold standard in excellence in the textile industry. It means strict criteria has been met on production standards and worker welfare – from farm to factory.
