Welcome to myza,
Everyone I know is exhausted, both physically and mentally. We're all run ragged by the frenetic pace of modern life, no longer having the ability or so it seems, to switch off and relax and when we do finally crawl in to bed, we are confronted by anxiety-induced sleeplessness!
Interestingly, most people think it is normal to feel like this, myself included. Its only recently, that I’ve woken up to the fact – no pun intended - that there are real health problems associated with a lack of sleep. Studies have shown that fatigue is one of the most injurious conditions to health. Let’s face it, without energy you are done for. It’s like a power failure to the body. The liver will not function well, your absorption, circulation and kidney function will be poor, your muscles will not be toned and you will be more prone to depression. Without sleep, we are more susceptible to diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, impaired immune function and Alzheimer. That’s enough negativity to give you sleepless nights!
So, ask yourself the following: how bright are you when you wake up? Do you leap out of bed with vitality or ease out like a snail from its shell? Do you rush and grab that health busting juice cleanser or do you wondering round in a state of brain fog reaching for that first shot of caffeine to get you going?
What about half way through the day? Are you still full of beans or already onto your 10th cup of coffee?
How exhausted are you at night? Do you feel the day’s activities have taken their toll leaving you slumped on the sofa, too tired for guests or for dinner out, or are you still game for more? To accept some tiredness at night is obviously ok but regular exhaustion is bad.
But how much sleep do you need? The National Sleep Foundation guidelines say we need between seven to nine hours of sleep per night, but with our modern lifestyles how plausible is that now? Experts now say it’s not the number of hours you spend snoring or the time you slope off to bed – it’s the quality of your sleep that’s really important. They recommend you think of six hours sleep of really good quality sleep as your absolute minimum. More sleep is not necessarily better – studies show that people who regularly sleep for nine hours per night usually perform just as badly as those who sleep for less than six hours. The best sign that you are getting enough sleep is if you wake every morning feeling refreshed. Because it is during sleep that your body’s innate healing capacities kick into full gear and your immune system gets revitalized.
If like me, you’ve been searching for the answer to the question - why can’t I sleep? And, most importantly - what can I do about it?
