MayfairSilk is focused on providing high quality, luxurious silk products, all made in London. The exclusive range of bedding and lifestyle products, which have been featured in myriad magazines and papers, features a unique soft-touch matte finish. Founders Darshana and Marcus Ubl have been creating successful business together for a decade and have moved from strength to strength.
Darshana is now an expert in the field, but she started out as just a consumer. “Having slept in silk for years …first-hand the positive difference it made to my hair, skin and sleep.” She puts a lot of time and effort into sourcing and developing fabrics and finishing processes. The aim is to create timeless pieces, with unexpected details and unique, hand finished designs.
The company is founded on two main values. They are quality, and sustainability. On quality: all of MayfairSilk’s products are made from high quality silk fabric, which starts life as grade 6A long fibre Mulberry Silk, and is weaved with a 22-25 momme rating – one of the best grades of silk. Its designs run the gamut, from leopard print pillowcases to pastel flamingo sleep masks.
Silk has numerous comfort and health benefits, and is recommended by leading Harley Street doctors, dermatologists and skin care specialists for your hair and skin. As well as being 100% fine silk, its products are all Certified Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex®, which means they are free from harsh chemicals, which means they are not only better for you, but also better for the environment. Its products are also all hypoallergenic. Plus, you always get a better night’s sleep when you can trust your bedding is good for the planet!
MayfairSilk’s attitude toward sustainability is that products are biodegradeable (at the end of their lives) and have a low environmental impact. MayfairSilk is all about 'slow fashion'. Good quality silk, produced in a higher momme is long-lasting when obeying a couple of simple care instructions, which can be found on the company’s website. If you care for your silk, it can last well over a decade.
Silk production is actually far more sustainable than cotton. When measuring production and its impact on the environment, silk has over 800 times less carbon emissions than cotton. All natural silk comes from Mulberry trees, as silkworms eat the leaves. A tonne of silk only emits 34 kilograms of carbon, where cotton emits 27,680 kilograms. Every step of production is ecologically sustainable, with nothing going to waste. It also reduces waste by using off-cuts for silk face-masks and silk scrunchies.
Beyond the benefits of silk production for the environment, MayfairSilk have also made specific strides in search of sustainability. It partnered with the Eden Reforestation Projects, the leading reforestation groups of the world. Each time you purchase from MayfairSilk, a tree is planted on your behalf through the Eden Reforestation Projects. Very little plastic is used in its packaging, and recycled plastic is used where necessary. All the cardboard in the packaging is also recycled cardboard. Over all, minimising the impact on the environment has truly been put to the forefront of MayfairSilk’s business practises.
Throughout the collection, MayfairSilk have prioritised sustainability, without minimising the quality and appeal of the products. Each of its items is designed with care, and attention to detail, so there is something to fit with every aesthetic. Whether you love fun prints, or are all about minimalism, they have designed something which will appeal to you – while taking care of you and our planet.
